Bounce Back podcast – presented by DrinkWise
DrinkWise created the podcast series Bounce Back to help Australians facing adversity to build resilience during COVID 19.
Presented by DrinkWise, Bounce Back featured Dr Andrew Rochford talking to prominent Australians about how they showed resilience and overcame adversity. Interviewees included:
- Olympians Anna Meares and Bronte Campbell
- Australian Test Cricket Captain Tim Paine
- Afghanistan veteran and Paralympian Curtis McGrath
- Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley
- Senior public servant Michael Coutts-Trotter.
Bounce Back promoted wellbeing and good mental health by showing that even in the most difficult times there are people you can turn to for support.
Bounce Back was launched with a message of support from then Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who said: “Listening to Bounce Back, and hearing how others have overcome tough times, might just provide the inspiration you need to stay strong, to stay positive and to stay resilient. I hope so.”

Bounce Back episode 13: Ben Crowe – Professional Mentor and Leadership Coach
One of the most downloaded episodes of Bounce Back featured Professional Mentor and Leadership Coach, Ben Crowe.
Ben’s work with professional athletes, sports teams and business leaders is renowned. He has helped in the lives and performances of tennis champions Ash Barty and Andre Agassi, world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore and the Australian Cricket Team.

Bounce Back Special Episode: Prof. Gordon Parker – Black Dog Institute
In a special episode for the series, Dr Rochford spoke with Professor Gordon Parker of the Black Dog Institute about overcoming ‘burn out’ and ways to bounce back from Covid-19. However, the messages of this episode apply to many aspects of life.
Professor Gordon Parker is one of Australia’s leading psychiatrists. Nearly 20 years ago he founded the Black Dog Institute, as the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health from the early years until later in life. Professor Parker has published more than 20 books and over 1,000 papers, focusing largely on depression, burnout and strategies to develop mental strength.
Bounce Back episode seven: Johnathan Thurston – Rugby League Immortal
In his early playing days, Johnathan Thurston was rejected time and time again – being told he didn’t have the right body type to pursue rugby league.
These days, many would consider Jonathan to be the NRL’s greatest ever player. He has won an unprecedented four Dally M medals – the highest individual award in the National Rugby League – and three World Golden Boot awards.
He was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to rugby league and as a role model, and in 2017 he was awarded the Human Rights Medal.
As Managing Director of the JT Academy, he’s making a difference in the lives of young Indigenous people, through wellbeing, education and employment programs.
Bounce Back episode six: Curtis McGrath – Paralympic Gold Medallist
On episode six of Bounce Back, we hear the inspiring story of former soldier turned Paralympic Gold Medalist Curtis McGrath. McGrath was on active duty in Afghanistan when he stepped on a bomb.
Moments later, with both his legs gone, Curtis had to talk his team through the first aid needed to save his life. That’s right, to complicate matters, he was the person on the team with intensive first aid training.
Seeing the trauma on the faces of his team, he tried to lighten the mood as he was being carried away on a stretcher, calling out, “You’ll see me at the Paralympics.”
Fast forward four years and Curtis is Australia’s flag bearer at the closing ceremony of the 2016 Rio Paralympics, having won gold in the men’s paracanoe KL2 division.
This ten-time World Champion has strength, resilience and a will to win – but also knows the importance of reaching out for help when he needed it most.
