Australian alcohol consumption trends

The drinking culture in Australia continues to evolve to one in which moderation is the norm. DrinkWise-commissioned research, Australian alcohol consumption trends, explores how attitudes and behaviours around alcohol have shifted in Australia over the past 15 years, the key influences of those changes and what this means for ongoing efforts to reduce harm from excessive alcohol consumption.
The 2024 findings include:
Australians also report being more conscious of moderation, with 96% of drinkers engaging in at least one moderation behaviour, such as limiting the number of drinks when driving, alternating between alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages or calling it a night earlier than normal. Importantly, nine in ten Australians say they could live without alcohol if they had to, illustrating that their choice to consume is one they are making in consideration of their lifestyle.
While the findings show a growing cultural acceptance of moderation, risky consumption remains among some groups, highlighting the need for ongoing education. These Australian alcohol consumption trends insights, alongside other independent and government data help inform DrinkWise campaigns like It’s okay to say nay, How to Drink Properly, Always respect, always DrinkWise and You won’t miss a moment if you DrinkWise.
Together, these campaigns continue to support Australians in making safer, healthier choices.
