Always respect, always DrinkWise
Each year in the lead up to AFL Gather Round, the NRL State of Origin and the AFL and NRL Finals series, some of the game’s heavyweights and archrivals join with DrinkWise, State Police forces, governments and support services to remind the community to Always respect, always DrinkWise. These whole-of-community collaborations remind sports fans about the importance of moderating alcohol consumption and always being respectful towards others.
As Adelaide prepares to welcome thousands of footy fans for Gather Round, DrinkWise has brought together AFL legend Mark Ricciuto, the South Australian Government, South Australia Police, Adelaide Metro, Adelaide Oval, support services including 1800RESPECT, No to Violence – Men’s Referral Service and 13YARN and club voices from both Adelaide and Port Adelaide football clubs to help ensure the weekend is remembered for the right reasons.
This whole-of-community effort encourages fans to enjoy the atmosphere, respect those around them and, if choosing to drink, to do so in moderation. Always respect, always DrinkWise is about fans enjoying the atmosphere and celebrating the occasion in a safe and responsible manner
Whether you are at the footy, at a pub, or watching from home, the message is the same – pace yourself, look out for your mates and family, make safe choices and respect everyone around you. For fans heading to games and planning to drink, that includes leaving the keys at home and taking advantage of free Footy Express services available with a game day ticket.
Importantly, Always respect, always DrinkWise also serves as an ongoing reminder that if people are having trouble managing their consumption or if their behaviour and their choices are impacting on the safety of others, asking for help is encouraged and there are support of services available that can provide advice and assistance.
Support from past and present AFL players and clubs
The Always respect, always DrinkWise message is also being backed by respected voices from across South Australian footy, helping bring the campaign to life in a way that feels familiar, credible and aligned to the Gather Round experience.

AFL Brownlow Medallist, dual premiership player and captain Mark Ricciuto is backing Always respect, always DrinkWise ahead of Gather Round. His long connection to the game, the crowd and club culture helps reinforce the message that a great footy weekend is one remembered for the right reasons.
“Footy brings big energy, big crowds, big passion and big moments. I’ve seen firsthand through my playing career and my time at the Club how much a great crowd can lift a game, but I’ve also seen how quickly a good day can go the wrong way and things can get out of hand. Running pubs has only reinforced for me how important it is to enjoy yourself responsibly. The best nights are the ones you remember for the right reasons,” said Ricciuto.
Gather Round is one of the best weekends on the footy calendar. It’s about barracking for your team, soaking up the atmosphere and enjoying every moment that makes footy unforgettable. If you’re having a drink, pace yourself, look out for your family, your mates and respect everyone around you. That’s how we make sure everyone has a great time and gets home safely.
Mark Ricciuto.
Current AFL players are also helping reinforce the message, with Adelaide’s Reilly O’Brien and Rory Laird and Port Adelaide’s Ollie Wines recording practical video messages reminding fans to leave the keys at home if planning to drink and to make the most of free Footy Express services with their game day ticket. Together, their support shows that Always respect, always DrinkWise is a shared message across clubs, communities and the wider Gather Round experience.

Backed by research
As an evidence-based organisation, DrinkWise relies on key independent research and clinical advice to underpin our campaigns and programs. In 2025 DrinkWise commissioned research to understand AFL and NRL fans attitudes towards drinking alcohol while watching or attending events. The key findings include*:

Ongoing education is critical
The Always respect, always DrinkWise campaign was first launched in September 2021. As a nation, Australians are drinking more moderately than ever before and this has become evident within the AFL and NRL communities. DrinkWise 2025 research has shown that 93% of AFL fans agree they typically drink responsibly at events and 86% of AFL fans agree they do not feel pressured to drink at major sporting events such as Gather Round and AFL finals. These statistics demonstrate that drinking behaviours are improving and trending in a positive direction. However, reminders are always helpful, with 31% of AFL fans saying they’ve sometimes gotten caught up in the excitement of major sporting events and consumed more alcohol than intended.
Ongoing television, radio, digital and social media reminders highlight the importance of fans behaving appropriately and looking after each other, whether watching the finals at home, at a pub or at a licensed venue, helping to ensure that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable time.
Previous campaigns
Each year in the lead up to the AFL and NRL Finals series, NRL State of Origin and Gather Round, some of the game’s heavyweights and archrivals join with DrinkWise, State Police forces, governments and support services to remind the community to Always respect, always DrinkWise. These whole-of-community collaborations remind sports fans about the importance of moderating their alcohol consumption (if choosing to drink) and always being respectful towards others.
For the first time, DrinkWise has bought together coaches from the Australian Football League (AFL) and National Rugby League (NRL) to remind fans to moderate their alcohol consumption and show respect to those around them during the upcoming AFL and NRL finals series.
Ivan Cleary, four-time NRL premiership-winning coach of Penrith Panthers, and Sam Mitchell, Hawthorn Hawks head coach and four-time AFL premiership player, are respected leaders on and off the field, known for uniting teams under pressure and achieving success at the highest level. Both share a commitment to inspiring the next generation and fostering a safe, respectful atmosphere for all fans.
This collaboration not only unites coaches from Australia’s two largest sporting codes it also brings together the NRL, support services (1800RESPECT, Men’s Referral Service and 13YARN), government, law enforcement, industry (Retail Drinks Australia, Endeavour Group, Coles Liquor, Australian Hotels Association, Clubs Queensland and ClubsNSW member venues) and the Adelaide Oval.
The campaign serves as an ongoing reminder that if people are having trouble managing their consumption or if their behaviour and their choices are impacting on the safety of family or others, asking for help is okay and there are support of services available that can provide advice and assistance.
DrinkWise Chief Executive Officer, Simon Strahan said: “Bringing together two AFL and NRL finals coaches for this campaign showcases the importance of this message. While these codes are rivals, the message of moderating alcohol and showing respect is universal. Coaches like Ivan and Sam influence behaviour on and off the field, setting the tone for players and fans.
“As excitement builds, these coaches remind us that passion and respect go hand in hand. Working with both codes, support services, government and law enforcement, we’re reinforcing a united approach to responsible consumption so fans can celebrate respectfully and enjoy every moment.”
Sam Mitchell, Hawthorn head coach, four-time AFL premiership player, Brownlow Medallist joined four-time NRL premiership-winning coach of Penrith Panthers, Ivan Cleary supporting the Always respect, always DrinkWise campaign, encouraging everyone to embrace the finals atmosphere and for those who choose to drink, to do so in moderation.

Footy is about more than just winning. It’s about connection, respect and the shared joy of the game. The message is simple: if you choose to drink during the finals, do it in moderation and look after everyone around you. That’s how we keep the celebration positive and enjoyable for everyone.
Sam Mitchell.

The NRL finals are a highlight of the year, the tradition, the build-up, the passion from fans across the country. We just want to make sure that excitement doesn’t spill over into behaviour that spoils the occasion. Whether celebrating or commiserating, do it in a way that’s respectful and safe for yourself and for everyone around you – your mates, your family – everyone. And if you’re choosing to have a drink, always make sure it’s in moderation.
Ivan Cleary.

But it’s about creating an atmosphere that will have every passionate fan – whether supporting the Maroons or the Blues – having experienced a great game, which means moderating your consumption if drinking and respecting those around you.
