When a person has diabetes their level of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high. Drinking alcohol can make it even more difficult to manage.
For someone with diabetes, alcohol can cause the following risks and complications:
- Higher levels of triglycerides or blood fats in your blood stream
- Hypoglycaemia
- Increased blood pressure
- Increased body weight by consuming extra calories
- Interference with insulin or diabetic medication
